Complex tower structures
Antennas, cables, connections and other visible components need to be documented from suitable viewing angles.
Turning telecommunications towers into detailed 3D digital assets. Skymap Africa captured an average of 800+ photographs per tower to document tower structures, antenna positions, visible connections and surrounding ground infrastructure.
Mobile connectivity relies on a complex network of towers, antennas and radio links. Understanding each site in three dimensions helps infrastructure teams inspect assets and make better-informed planning decisions.
Skymap Africa undertook a nationwide cell tower capture project across Kenya. Rather than recording tower coordinates alone, the team used a systematic image-capture plan to document visible structures and surrounding site context in a detailed digital representation.
The resulting digital twins provide an organised visual record to support infrastructure inspection, asset management and future network planning.

Project overview: high-detail image capture, tower structure documentation and network planning support.
A tower is more than a point on a map. Its structural components and relationship to the surrounding site influence inspection, maintenance and infrastructure planning.
Antennas, cables, connections and other visible components need to be documented from suitable viewing angles.
A single viewpoint cannot capture every side of a tower. Planned image capture helps record the structure from multiple perspectives.
Network teams need a useful record of the tower and its surrounding ground infrastructure, including sites that may be difficult to access.
Skymap Africa used carefully planned drone flights to create a more complete visual record of each cell tower and its immediate surroundings.

Detailed digital twins can help teams review existing assets, maintain structured records and assess future infrastructure needs.
Review visible tower components and site context without relying only on an in-person visual visit.
Maintain a detailed visual record of tower structures, antenna arrangements and visible connections.
Support suitability reviews and planning assessments for potential future infrastructure locations.
Capturing sites across Kenya also meant responding to changing access conditions. At one remote site, protests and a road closure required the team to postpone the visit and reschedule access.

Field documentation and aerial capture are combined to create a practical record of each site.
Cell towers are engineered assets. Their height, antenna orientation, visible connections and relationship to surrounding terrain all contribute to how they are inspected and managed.
By creating detailed digital twins, Skymap Africa helps transform physical telecommunications infrastructure into inspectable digital information that can support asset management, informed network planning and more deliberate decisions about future infrastructure.
Better connectivity begins with understanding the infrastructure that makes it possible.

Skymap Africa combines drone mapping and geospatial expertise to help document infrastructure and turn complex sites into useful digital information.
